5 Signs Your Website is Stuck in 2015 (And Why That’s Bad for Business)

Cast your mind back to 2015. Man buns were a questionable fashion trend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was in cinemas, and we were all arguing about what colour that dress was (blue and black, obviously).

It was a decent year.

But if your website hasn’t changed much since then, we have a problem. In the digital world, five years is more like a century. Internet trends move faster than a London bus in the rain.

If you’re wondering why your online enquiries have dried up or why people leave your site after three seconds, it might be time for a reality check. Here are five tell-tale signs that your website is stuck in the past—and why it’s costing you customers.

1. You still have a “Slider” at the top of your homepage

Remember those image carousels that slide automatically from left to right? Back in the day, web designers loved them. Clients loved them because they could squeeze 20 different messages onto the homepage.

Here’s the truth: Users hate them.

They are distracting, slow down your site, and—here is the kicker—most people only see the first slide before they scroll past the rest. It’s like trying to show someone a photo album by snatching the pictures out of their hand every two seconds.

The Fix: A static, high-quality “Hero” image with one clear message. Tell them what you do and who you help, right there, without the moving parts.

2. The “Wall of Text” is alive and well

If your homepage looks like a copy of War and Peace, you’re doing it wrong.

In 2015, we used to think we needed to explain every single detail of our service history on the landing page. Today? People scan. They don’t read. If a user lands on your site and sees a dense block of text with no paragraph breaks, their brain immediately says, “Too much work,” and they hit the back button.

The Fix: Use “White Space.” Give your content room to breathe. Break text up with punchy subheadings, bullet points, and images. Make it easy for someone to grab the info in 5 seconds while waiting for the kettle to boil.

3. It fails the “Thumb Test”

Pull out your phone right now and look at your website. Can you easily navigate it with just your thumb, or are you having to pinch and zoom to read the menu?

In 2015, mobile traffic was rising. Now, for many UK businesses, over 60% of traffic comes from mobile. If your site isn’t “responsive” (meaning it reshapes itself to fit a phone screen), you are manually turning away the majority of your potential customers.

It’s the equivalent of locking your front door and putting a sign up saying, “Entry only for people carrying laptops.”

The Fix: A modern WordPress theme that is mobile-first. Your menu needs to be a “hamburger” menu (those three little lines) that is easy to tap.

4. The copyright date says 2018 (or older)

Nothing screams “I’m not paying attention to my business” quite like a footer that says © 2014.

It sounds like a small detail, but subconsciously, it tells the visitor that this site is abandoned. If they think the site is abandoned, they assume the business is too. It kills trust instantly. In 2024, your website is your digital handshake. You wouldn’t shake hands with a skeleton; don’t let your website do the talking for you.

The Fix: Keep your site fresh! Not just the date, but the blog posts or portfolio too. Show that you are active, open, and ready for business.

5. It’s slower than a Monday morning queue at the Post Office

Speed has always been important, but it’s critical now. If your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load, you’ve lost them.

Older websites are often bloated with heavy plugins, uncompressed images, or outdated code that chugs along like an old tractor. Google also hates slow sites; they will penalise you in search rankings, meaning you won’t even show up when people search for your services.

The Fix: A speed audit. This often involves cleaning up the database, compressing images, and moving to faster hosting.

Time for an upgrade?

If you read this list and recognised your website, don’t panic. It’s not a life sentence, but it is a sign that you need a refresh.

Your website should be your hardest-working employee, selling your services 24/7. If it’s stuck in 2015, it’s probably calling in sick a lot.

A modern WordPress build doesn’t have to cost the earth, but it will make you look professional, trustworthy, and ready for business today.
